‘Black Adam’ opens to decent box office numbers despite middling reviews

It was super numbers for a not-so super movie: “Black Adam,” the hotly anticipated Dwayne Johnson-led DC film, headed into the weekend having racked up $7.6 million at the box office in Thursday previews, Deadline reports.

The healthy figure was achieved despite its meager reception by critics.

The film was slammed by critics as “a wildly uneven letdown,” according to their consensus on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Tracking for the film was previously projected at $70 million, though now it’s down to over $60 million. It is expected — like many other Johnson blockbusters — to fare better around the world than in the U.S., according to Deadline.

Though a satisfying enough debut, the numbers for “Black Adam” pale in comparison to its star’s highest-ever preview nights — both part of the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

“Furious 7″ in 2015 sped into its first weekend with $15.8 million, while 2017′s “The Fate of the Furious” parked behind it with $10.4 million, according to the outlet. For both “Fast” films though, Johnson was part of an all-star cast rather than the lead.

Also featuring Pierce Brosnan and former Netflix teen romcom heartthrob Noah Centineo, “Black Adam” centers on the titular character who was granted the powers of Egyptian deities and, thousands of years later “is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world,” according to IMDb.
