Black entrepreneurs to be celebrated at upcoming Detroit Historical Museum events

The Detroit Historical Society will present two panel discussions featuring honorees from The Hustle, a project celebrating the city’s Black entrepreneurs.

Taking place at the Detroit Historical Museum, inspiring Detroit entrepreneurs will share insight into the experiences of owning neighborhood businesses, which serve as the backbone of the city.

The first panel, scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, is titled "The Hustle: Beauty & Hair Panel Discussion," according to a news release.

Moderated by Nefertiti Harris, the conversation will feature Danyell Bragg of Hair by Danni Bee, Chinonye Akunne of Ilera Apothecary and Sebastian Jackson from The Social Club. It will delve into the intersecting worlds of community, beauty and businesses.

The second panel, "The Hustle: Youth Opportunities Panel Discussion," is scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 10. The conversation will focus on support systems and educational experiences for city students outside of a traditional setting.

Featured participants include Khali Sweeney of Downtown Boxing Gym, Emmanuel Smith, known as “Mr. E in the D,” and Alanna Tremble of She Too STEM.

The panels are included in the cost of the museum’s general admission. It is free for members, or $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and military, and $6 for children. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on Facebook.

The Hustle, created in 2022, is a program celebrating the city’s African American entrepreneurs.

It was created to follow in the footsteps of the award-winning Detroit 67 project, which was designed to further understand the historic events leading up to the Uprising of 1967 and allow different voices to share their perspectives.

The Hustle celebrates businesses that serve as the backbone of the community and often go unrecognized for their efforts.

The Detroit Historical Society encourages community members to nominate impactful businesses in their area. All nominees are featured in the project, but 36 entrepreneurs are selected for a series of special exhibitions at the Detroit Historical Museum.

The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave. in the Cultural Center Historic District in Midtown.
