Black Figure Skater Starr Andrews Makes History At The Grand Prix
The 21-year-old became the first Black figure skater to win a medal at the ISU Grand Prix since it started in 1995.
At the ISU Grand Prix last month held in Mississauga, Ontario, the skater made history when she won the silver medal in the competition’s free skating section. Making her the first Black skater to ever win a medal in this category. For her history-making performance, she skated to a remake of “Je Suis Malade by Lara Fabian.
Andrews started learning to skate at just five years old and became known for the viral video of her skating to “Whip My Hair”.
She took to Instagram to express excitement: “I can’t even put into word how I feel right now!!,” she said in the post. “I couldn’t be more proud of how I skated in Canada. Thank you to all the support I’ve gotten even on the skates that weren’t my best. This is a dream come true.”
In an interview with Shondaland, she shared the importance of skating and what she hopes to represent in the sport.
“I want my skating to help people remember that no matter what they’re going through or who they are or where they come from,” she said in the interview., “that their lives matter, their dreams matter, and there’s always something to live for.”
