Black Lives Matter Morristown Starts Adopt-A-Family Program

MORRISTOWN, NJ — It's the time of year for holiday toy drives. As Black Lives Matter Morristown conducted theirs for local homeless shelters, founder T'Anna Kimbrough thought maybe they could help even more.

It's a more difficult holiday season than most because of the coronavirus pandemic. BLMM announced Monday its adopt-a-family initiative to help anyone in need.

"All our neighbors could be suffering," Kimbrough said. "This is just what I think needs to be done, and we’ll make it work."

The organization will "adopt" 10 families to help them with their needs. They cannot guarantee all wishes will get granted but promise to fulfill at least one wish. Those interested should apply by the end of the business day Dec. 11 by emailing blmmorristown@gmail.com.

See the form below:

Kimbrough didn't set any rigid qualifications for the program. She just wants families to tell BLMM why the program could help them.

"You could have families that make over $150K a year, and there’s still a need, whether that need is financial or home goods," she said.

Kimbrough felt inspired not just because of community needs but because of the kindness she's seen through difficult times. She noticed during BLMM's summer series, which included teach-ins, vigils and joy and healing circles.

And that kindness carried all the way through to the "Get Off Our Necks March" last August in Washington, D.C. Tens of thousands called for racial justice on the 57th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.

"There are really good people out there that still," Kimbrough said. "Regardless of the anti-Blackness that’s taking place right now and the pandemic and a lot of lives taken from us, people are still giving and paying it forward and wanting to see other people happy."

People can help and make donations by contacting BLMM on Facebook or at blmmorristown@gmail.com.
