Black Women’s Music Is All Over TikTok, Here Are The Tracks You Can’t Escape
One scroll down your for you page and you’re likely to see several videos made to the same audio. Users create their own content to some of the most viral songs on the app. These are songs that often become dance or voice over trends, amplifying the reach of the music. According to a study done by music-analytics company MRC Data, songs that trend on TikTok often end up charting on the Billboard 100 or Spotify Viral 50. Additionally, 67% of the app’s users are more likely to seek out songs on music-streaming services after hearing them on TikTok.
At the moment, a majority of the top viral songs on the app are by Black women. This increases the chances that their songs will make it on the Billboard charts.

Kali, who originally had TikTok on lock with her 2022 single, “Mmm mmm,” has another hit on her hands. Her song “Area Codes” has users from all over rapping her lyrics along with her. Users from all over the country with diverse backgrounds have all learned the words to the first 20 seconds of the track. Not only are users running the track up on the app, but now “Area Codes” has made its way onto Billboard charts. This marks Kali’s first time on Billboard Hot 100, with the song starting off at number 54.

TikTok loves Sukihana. She is often trending on the app for something she has said. User constantly employ the audio from these moments to create their own skits. Now Sukihana is trending for a quite provocative song. The rapper has never been one to shy away from topics that are taboo about sexual desires and kinks. Her song “Eating,” is no different. Users enjoy her candid thoughts on performing acts on her partner.

Another aspect of TikTok that upcoming artists can take advantage of is the algorithm. There is no one formula for the algorithm, which means big-name celebrities and everyday people have just as much of a chance to go viral. This was the case for the song “Hoetale” by rap duo Twynn. The two queer rappers gained user’s attention to the song simply by dropping a 15-second clip on the app. The clip went viral and in turn, had users begging the duo to release the full song. It is now available on all music streamers.
