SULLIVAN TWP. − Firefighters battled a house fire Sunday night in the 500 block of U.S. Route 224.

The blaze was reported around 11 p.m., according to a 911 dispatcher.

Nobody who lived there was home at the time, the owner of the property told an Ashland County Sheriff's Deputy who arrived on scene first to find the structure fully engulfed.

The Sullivan Fire Department handled the incident with mutual aid assistance from the Savannah Volunteer Fire Company, Ruggles-Troy Volunteer Fire Department and the Nankin-Orange Township Fire Department.

The Sheriff's Office provided traffic control until Ohio Department of Transportation could set up signs notifying motorists of the detour.

ODOT also used salt to keep a section of Route 224 from freezing as water leaked onto the roadway and caused ice to form.

A cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

Firefighters from the Sullivan Fire Department were not immediately available for comment.
