'Blitz Build' plans to complete a Falmouth Habitat home in 5 days

FALMOUTH — The Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod is scheduled to complete a Blitz Build for Habitat for Humanity Cape Cod during a five-day period next week.

Sept. 19-23, an army of professionals is expected to complete a three-bedroom ranch by Friday night. Mike Duffany, president of M. Duffany Builders is project manager for the Blitz Build.

The event is the fifth such project on the Cape.

Crews are scheduled by the day and hour. The frame is scheduled to be erected by noon on Monday. Plumbers, electricians and HVAC crews will come in Monday afternoon. Inspections and insulation installation are scheduled for Tuesday.

"There's a lot of logistics and fine tuning to make sure they hit targets within the week," said Christopher Flanagan,  executive director of Home Builders and Remodelers of Cape Cod.

Donations, discounts make Blitz Build possible

Candace Geers, business development and marketing manager for M. Duffany Builders, called the expedited project a "finely crafted dance."

Every two years the trade organization comes together to build an affordable home. The planning takes a year. Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod members donate supplies and volunteer hours of labor. Contributions of lumber, windows, doors, and the rest are offered at deep discounts or donated, Duffany said.

Project managers work with town building inspectors to ensure all aspects of the home meet building codes.

“They’ll literally start on Monday and be done on Friday,” said Tara Cronin, Habitat for Humanity volunteer and community relations coordinator.

One of 10 affordable Falmouth homes planned

The home’s owner has put her required volunteer hours into other affordable homes, Cronin said.

The 2022 Blitz house is one of 10 affordable homes being constructed on a 5.5-acre site on Willett Way in Falmouth. It's the first Habitat build on the Upper Cape. The construction professionals will work rain or shine, Duffany said. In 2017, the crew finished before Hurricane Jose bore down upon the Cape.

"This is not a tough sell among our membership," Flanagan said. "This home is being built for a single mom living and working in Falmouth, and she’ll be able to raise her kids there. Members see the value in making sure we’re building homes for people that can live and work on Cape Cod."
