Blizzard-like conditions in Saskatchewan threaten road closures
Brace for possible road closures this weekend, as a powerful winter-like storm is set to whip across Saskatchewan on Saturday and Sunday. The heaviest of the snow will be focused north of the Yellowhead Highway, including for major cities like Saskatoon and Prince Alberta, where 20-30+ cm of snow may fall. Southern communities shouldn't be disregarded either, as gusty winds will still lead to periods of whiteouts and blowing snow. More on the timing and impacts, below.

This weekend: Heavy snow, strong winds and blowing snow will make for difficult travel
An Alberta clipper will impact parts of Saskatchewan on Saturday, with heavy snow, strong winds and blowing snow all threatening travel conditions.
Between 20-30+ cm of snow is expected for the northern Grainbelt region of Saskatchewan -- spanning from North Battleford to Prince Albert, Martensville, Saskatoon and Melfort. A winter storm warning has been issued for the region.
"Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow," Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said in its warning. "If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop."
Southern communities like Regina shouldn't be disregarded due to the lower snowfall totals forecast because wind gusts will be quite strong through Saturday afternoon, evening and into Sunday morning, which could lead to hazardous travel for these areas as well.
"Gusts between 50-80 km/h are expected across southern and central parts of the province and this will lead to blowing snow, whiteout conditions and the possibility of road closures," warns Kelly Sonnenburg, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.
Along with the snow and winds, temperatures will be rapidly falling from Saturday into Sunday leaving the province in a deep freeze for early next week.
