As news and rumors about the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School roll up and down news feeds, the Newtown Youth & Family Services organization in Newtown, Conn.—a 30-year-old mental health clinic—aims to provide emergency counseling services for anyone affected by the shooting.

Candice Bohr, who runs the organization—located at 15 Berkshire Road in Sandy Hook—announced on Friday that it will be open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The organization will provide "emergency counseling for families, community members or staff involved in the Sandy Hook Elementary school tragedy." Walk-ins are welcome.

The nonprofit licensed clinic and youth services organization is accepting donations on its website. Bohr says the money will go directly to people affected by the massacre.

In general, what's known as "psychological first aid" can offer solace and support to those in emergencies, and it's proven especially effective when offered on a community level. Emergency counselors can also simply sit with people while they're crying or talking through their experiences; get them food and water; connect them with family, friends and support groups; and help coordinate funeral services.
