Wednesday in politics: Kerry gives first major speech as top diplomat, and more

Secretary of State John Kerry gives his first major public speech Wednesday morning since replacing Hillary Clinton.

Kerry will speak at the University of Virginia on “how a relatively small investment in our foreign policy and diplomatic efforts results in a big return for America’s economy and security.”

Later in the day, Kerry will meet at the White House with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, and on Sunday he leaves for a trip to Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

Biden will host the Medal of Valor ceremony with Attorney General Eric Holder at the White House at midday Wednesday. The Medal of Valor honors public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect others from harm.

Also worth noting on Wednesday:

• Republican Sen. John McCain will hold a town hall meeting in Phoenix. During town halls meetings on Tuesday, McCain had to defend his proposed immigration plan to upset residents concerned about border security.

• Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, Sandra, are to appear in federal court to answer criminal charges that they engaged in an alleged scheme to spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items.

And then there is this: First lady Michelle Obama will appear on the “Rachael Ray” show via Skype for a game of “Q & Ray.” Topics that are expected to be covered? The first lady’s new haircut, the first family's favorite Oscar-nominated films and the memorable items she keeps in her office.
