Hurricane Irene’s effect on one D.C. block

By Caroline Que, Yahoo! D.C.

Several row houses in the Washington neighborhood of Shaw had damage after Hurricane Irene blew through Saturday night.

These homes in the 500 block of R Street NW were roped off after the storm crumbled the tops of their north-facing facades. Notice how the entryway awning is now crooked. (Click the photos to enlarge.)

Here's a time-lapse video, taken from the west side of the same block, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Watch the streetlamp shake and the trees whip around, especially toward the end of the video.
