Blood Drive Tuesday Honors Middletown South Nurse Who Died Of COVID

TINTON FALLS, NJ – New Jersey Blood Services is hosting a blood drive this Tuesday, May 3 at the Church of St. Anselm in Tinton Falls.

Tuesday's blood drive will be hosted in memory of Peggy Whiteside, a former nurse at Middletown High School South who died in 2021 from complications related to COVID-19. Whiteside has been retired for many years, but she was beloved in her time at Middletown South.

Whiteside's family also set up a scholarship in her memory at Middletown High School South for a graduating student pursuing a nursing career.

Whiteside was a member of that church, St. Anselm at 1028 Wayside Rd. in Tinton Falls. The blood drive will go from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. All are welcome.

As a registered nurse, Whiteside had a strong interest in community health, as she was known for bringing her blood pressure monitor to church and was often seen taking people’s blood pressure in the social time after church services.

Says New York Blood Center, the for-profit company hosting the drive: It only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.

To make an appointment at this blood drive, donors can call 1-800-933-2566 or visit this link.
