Bloodied Moscow Councillor Claims Police Violence During Anti-Kremlin Protest

Moscow City Councilwoman Aleksandra Parushina claimed she was struck in the head by police after emerging with a bloody head wound during anti-Kremlin protests on Saturday, July 27.

Hundreds of arrests were reported as protesters gathered near the mayor’s office on Moscow’s Tverskaya Street on Saturday, calling for opposition candidates to be allowed stand in city council elections.

“We were just standing there with other people. No one was acting unlawfully in any way. We were standing there absolutely peacefully,” Parushina said.

“In this horrific stampede they started hitting everyone on their heads. I received a blow. At first I did not even feel the pain, just saw so much blood on me from somewhere. I was probably unconscious for a moment.”

Media reports indicate that several leading opposition politicians were detained in the days leading up to the protest.
