Bloomfield boys’ soccer a work in progress

After a 5-0 loss to East Catholic on Oct. 12 and just one win on the season, coach Tyler Gibbs said his Bloomfield boys’ soccer team is definitely in a rebuilding season, but learning lessons that will be beneficial to the Warhawks’ future.

“There are guys who need fundamentals, and there are guys who understand a bit more,” he said, adding that without an assistant coach, it’s difficult to split up practices for what is essentially two groups.

“I don’t sub very often, because the guys who I’d put in are so far below the starters, that it’s difficult to get them to where they need to be,” he said.

In practices, a lot of time is spent on defensive shape, and working on fitness of midfielders and attackers.

“In general, we’re trying to combine and get the ball wide,” he said. “When our fullbacks got involved at the end of the [East Catholic] game, we had more options for getting guys wide and combine a little bit. The two or three shots that we had came from doing that.”

The Warhawks are also working on set pieces - particularly getting marks to have better position on their opponents. The effort in practices and games has been encouraging, he added.

“I’m proud of them for the progress they’ve made,” Gibbs said. “Sportsmanship-wise, especially. We have a reputation and culture we’re trying to change. It’s not about individuals, it’s not about arguing. It’s about camaraderie and teamwork. That’s priority No. 1.”
