To mark Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day on Dec. 7, the American Legion Auxiliary of Bloomington presented the Quilt of Valor to a U.S. Navy veteran who saw duty during World War II aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific.

He is Herbert Ray, a 96-year-old resident of Ellettsville. Ray and his family were honored in a ceremony Friday at the American Legion Post in Bloomington.

Larry Newton, a representative of Quilts of Valor and a veteran himself, presented the quilt to Ray.

“This quilt is to provide comfort and healing to a veteran that was touched by war. Thank you for your service,” he said.

During his service, Ray was stationed in Indiana, New York, and California before moving to the Pacific front. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Victory Medal.
