EDITORS NOTE: Updated with Saturday's first-round tee times.

Might there be an early fireworks show at Cascades this weekend?

Plenty of scores were in the red in the final round of the Medalist two weeks ago on the usual Quarry-Pine loop, led by a 65, 67, 68 by three of the top four Men's finishers with a pair of 69s leading the Senior pack.

Several of the same faces will be back Saturday and Sunday as qualifying for the 94th annual City Golf Tournament championship flights gets under way at 7:30 a.m.

The long chased after tournament scoring record is 131 by Ike Martin.

Last year's champions, Jace Day (Men's), Jim Alexander (Seniors) and Martin (Super Seniors) are not required to play, automatically earning the No. 1 seed when match play begins on July 9.

If all three return, only the top 15 in each group after two rounds of qualifying will make the top flight. There are 38 players in the Men's flight, 26 in the Seniors and 16 in the Super Seniors.

Day did not play in the Medalist, but Alexander did, winning the Senior title. He had won the past two year's Seniors City qualifiers and took the Medalist title so he's on quite the run. Martin won a 12th City title last year, his Super Senior title going with three Senior and eight Men's crowns.

Complete tee times were not available as of press time.

Regular, women's, juniors qualifying

Qualifying for the regular flights in men's seniors and super seniors as well as juniors and women is ongoing until July 4. Just one round on the Quarry-Pine layout is required.

Entry fee is $15 for regular and women's while juniors are free.

The tourney is open to all golfers from Monroe and surrounding counties (Greene, Owen, Brown, Morgan and Lawrence). A minimum of four players are required for each bracket.
