Bloomington entertainment: Reverend Horton Heat, gallery walk, quilt show, roller derby

Creative events for everyone abound this weekend in Bloomington. From the annual quilt show at the convention center, a look at beasts and botanicals at the Lilly Library, a walk through art galleries in the downtown area, a dance at the Lotus Firebay to the crowd-pleasing music of Reverend Horton Heat at the Buskirk-Chumley and Hank Ruff at the Bluebird, there's plenty to enjoy. For anyone interested in roller derby, there's also the chance to meet Bloomington's new team and learn more about the sport Saturday at The Warehouse.

30th Indiana Heritage Quilt Show at convention center

More than 200 quilts will be on exhibit during the 30th anniversary Indiana Heritage Quilt Show, open Thursday through Saturday at the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave. In addition to quilst entered in the show, there will be challenge quilts with theme of “Send Us Some Flowers” on display. There will also be workshops and vendors each day. Tickets are $10 for adults ($20 for the full show) and $2 for ages 7-12. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

'Flora + Fauna' exhibit and activities Thursday at Lilly Library

The Lilly Library will celebrate its spring exhibition, "Flora + Fauna: A Bounty of Beasts and Botanicals," 5-7 p.m. Thursday at 1200 E. Seventh St. The exhibit seeks to explore humanity's relationship with nature and how that relationship intersects with bookmaking and book history. More than 80 books and manuscripts spanning over 1,200 years will be on display. Activities giving visitors a chance to interact with local plants and animals will be offered, from meeting adoptable animals from the Johnson County Humane Society to making pressed plant keepsakes like those found in the IU Herbarium. The family-friendly event is free.

Ritmos Dance Night on Thursday

Lotus Education and Arts Foundation will host a Ritmos Dance Night 8:45-10:45 p.m. Thursday at 105 S. Rogers St. Everyone is welcome to join for salsa, bachata, timba, merengue and more types of dancing. Free.

Art exhibits, Gallery Walk happening on Friday

Several area art exhibitions are opening on Friday, in conjunction with the monthly Bloomington Gallery Walk, which is 5-8 p.m. the first Friday of each month at Bloomington area galleries.

Juniper Art Gallery, which opened March 1 at 615 W. Kirkwood Ave., will participate. Special music by Abyssinia will be 6-7:30 p.m.

In the John Waldron Arts Center Rosemary P. Miller galleries, the new exhibit Climate Shock will be on display, with work by Dena Hawes, metalsmithing and sculpture; Kriste Lindberg, photography; and David J. Emerson Young, paintings and drawings. The exhibit will showcase creations relating to the climate crisis. The exhibit, at 122 S. Walnut St., will be through April 7.

Other exhibits will open at By Hand Gallery, inside Fountain Square at 101 W. Kirkwood Ave., Suite 109; and Lotus Firebay, at 105 S. Rogers St.

Reverend Horton Heat warms up at Buskirk-Chumley

Bringing his own style of heat, Reverend Horton Heat will perform Friday night at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. The general admission show begins at 7:30 p.m. with Scott H. Hank Ruff performs Friday, Dawes on Tuesday at Bluebird

Local favorite Hank Ruff will perform his country favorites at 9 p.m. Friday at The Bluebird, 216 N. Walnut St. Doors open at 8 p.m. for the 21-plus show. Tickets are $10.

On Tuesday, it's Dawes turn to shower the audience with American folk rock. The 8 p.m. show costs $30 per person. Doors will open at 7 p.m. For more info on both, go to thebluebird.ws.

Roller Derby meet and greet on Saturday

Anyone who wants to learn more about roller derby and meet the local roller derby team, BOOMington Blockheads, can head over to The Warehouse, at 1526 S. Rogers St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday for the free event.
