Bloomington restaurant intruder fatally shoots customer, wounds server

A “cold-blooded killer” shot a customer dead and wounded a server at a Bloomington restaurant Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a man wearing a maroon hoodie and purple surgical gloves entered the Co Tu Oriental Cuisine restaurant at 8907 Penn Ave. S. and brandished a gun, Bloomington Police Chief Booker T. Hodges said at a news conference late Wednesday afternoon.

Customers wrestled with the man and forced him out of the restaurant, which is located in a strip mall at West 90th Street. He returned a second time, Hodges said, and patrons again pushed him out. However, when the man entered the restaurant the third time, he shot and killed a 49-year-old man who was a customer and wounded a 25-year-old server, shooting the man in the leg and buttocks, the police chief said.

The man who was killed was a frequent patron of the restaurant, said Hodges, who urged the gunman to surrender to police in the city’s first homicide of 2022.

“To the person responsible, I’m going to say, Do us all a favor and turn yourself in,” Hodges said. “In Bloomington you don’t get to shoot people and think you will enjoy the benefits of a free society because our detectives are going to keep looking and eventually we are going to lock you up.”

The city of Bloomington had one homicide last year.
