'It has blown up significantly': Weymouth looks to add pickleball courts to meet demand

WEYMOUTH − Town officials are looking to build four pickleball courts at Riley Field as the sport continues to grow in popularity.

Weymouth Recreation Director Steve Reilly recently went before the town council seeking $320,000 to build the courts and buy the necessary equipment for Riley Field.

Reilly said the town settled on that location after several meetings with a group of pickleball players seeking more courts in town.

Reilly said there are two pickleball courts behind the Whipple Senior Center and another going in as part of the Beals Park project.

Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and pingpong and has been growing in popularity across the country. Courts are popping up as more players flock to the sport and leagues begin in more communities.

Riley Field is near the Allerton House on School House Road.
