Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico data breached

Oct. 6—Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico members' health information was breached this summer, according to the health insurance agency.

The agency says it is offering one free year of personal identity and privacy protection through IDX.

Compromised member information includes social security numbers, bank account information, names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth, Blue Cross and Blue Shield said. The agency recently sent out letters to past and current members to inform them of the incident.

The breach happened in late June, Blue Cross and Blue Shield said, when members' information was accessed by an unauthorized party at a vendor of TMG Health. TMG provides third party administrative services to Medicare enrollees of HCSC Insurance Services Company (HISC).which contracts with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield said "TMG is working closely with the vendor to ensure systems are updated to block these activities and prevent disclosures of this nature from occurring in the future," and that law enforcement has been notified about the incident.

The health insurer encourages members to reach out to IDX by phone at 1-888-727-2311 or online at https://response.idx.us/notice-info for the free service.

"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mexico takes the confidentiality of its members' data very seriously," Laurie Volkin, a spokeswoman for the health agency, said in a statement. "An incident notice was sent to any member whose protected health information may have been impacted by the incident. Members are being provided with steps to take to help recognize identify theft and are being offered one-year of complimentary personal identity and privacy protection through a national leader in data breach response services."
