Blue defeats white in Penn State’s annual spring game, 10-0. Here’s what stood out

Penn State played its annual Blue-White game Saturday on a rain-soaked field at Beaver Stadium, with the blue team ultimately coming out on top 10-0.

The game marks the conclusion of spring practice for the Nittany Lions and is the last time the team will play publicly on the field until their season opener against West Virginia.

Here’s what stood out from the team’s spring game.

Player of the game

DE Dani Dennis-Sutton: Dennis-Sutton was one of the best players on the field Saturday and his performance doesn’t even come with the caveat that he was facing the bottom of the depth chart players. The sophomore defensive end finished up his first spring ball with a great performance against Drew Shelton and Caedan Wallace, who project as potential starters for the team at offensive tackle. Sure, it was not Olumuyiwa Fashanu, the team’s star left tackle, but Shelton is competing with Wallace at right tackle and neither is a slouch at the position. Dennis-Sutton consistently beat them and got around the edge to pressure whichever quarterback was leading the blue team. That’s quite the bow to put on practice and points to what could be a breakout season for the highly touted defensive end.

Stat of the game

Eighty: That’s how many receiving yards Omari Evans had in what was an impressive performance. Penn State head coach James Franklin has not been shy about the competition at wide receiver and the need for a player to step up at the position behind Harrison Wallace III and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Evans was the first receiver to take reps with the other two as a third receiver and delivered in the team’s final spring practice. He consistently got open and used his speed to run away from the team’s defensive backs. His development at the position could be a big boost for a group that sorely needs depth behind its projected starters heading into the fall.

What’s next

The Nittany Lions will now wait until Sept. 2 to take the field again. That matchup will come against the West Virginia Mountaineers at home in what should be Allar’s first start at quarterback for the program. His much anticipated competitive debut will come against a team that is shaking off a difficult 2022 season in West Virginia. The Mountaineers went 5-7 and struggled to close out victories in tight games. The matchup will be the first of two between the two teams in the near future, with Penn State returning the favor and traveling to Morgantown in 2024.
