Blue Devils fall from unbeaten ranks, Islanders roll Bays

WEST BRANCH – The Sault Blue Devils football team dropped a nail-biter on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Ogemaw Heights Falcons, 7-6.

It was the first taste of defeat for the Sault squad, following a 4-0 start.

The Falcons scored on a 20-yard pass roughly halfway through the second quarter, but the Sault answered right back with just over four minutes left in the first half as Sault quarterback Callen Campbell hit Max Scott with a 16-yard scoring pass. The difference was, the Falcons kicked the extra point and the Sault failed in its two-point attempt.

The Blue Devils have shown the ability this season to close games out late, but on Saturday, that was not the case. They worked their way down the field on their final drive, making it all the way to Ogemaw's 10-yard line before an interception essentially sealed the Falcon win.

Campbell led the Blue Devils in rushing with 55 yards on 11 carries.

“Give them credit,” Sault coach Scott Menard said of the Falcons. “They had a really solid game plan defensively and they executed it very well.”

In the passing game, Campbell was 7-of-14 for 77 yards with a TD and two interceptions, both of which came in the final three minutes of the game. Max Scott led the receiving corps with three catches for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Sault was led by Kaydin Lujon with 13 tackles. Evan Arbic had six stops, while Adam Horrigan and Cale Bell had five each.

Things don't get any easier for the Blue Devils (4-1) as they travel to Kingsley on Friday for a date with the Stags.
