Blue Jay Roundup: Golf finishes out annual East-West Classic

Aug. 16—JAMESTOWN — It was not the meet the Blue Jays were expecting Tuesday.

The threat of inclement weather forced tournament officials to cancel the opening round of the annual East-West girls' golf classic on Monday morning. Golfers had about four holes of play in before the opening round was suspended and eventually canceled.

"It was kind of a bummer that we didn't get a full-18 in yesterday because that's when can you kind of start to find your groove and get comfortable while day two, you can really fine tune some things," Jamestown High School head coach Tracy Iliff said.

The second round went off without a hitch and for a good portion of the morning and afternoon teams from both the WDA and EDC were hitting it hard at the Jamestown Country Club.

"It's always kind of fun to see everybody there," Iliff said.

Fargo Davies took home the team title, carding a 322, defeating second-place Bismarck Century by 10 strokes. Jamestown placed 16th out of 17 competing teams with a score of 422.

Jamestown will be back in conference action on Friday at Bismarck's Tom O'Leary. Teams are scheduled to tee off at 10 a.m.

"A couple of the girls wanted to do just as well as they did on (last) Friday so they were a little disappointed with their overall score but when you look at the big picture, we're playing a different course," Iliff said. "The Country Club played much longer than Watford City did. There's different challenges to face and it was a learning moment for a lot of the girls.

"But it's always fun to be at home and be somewhere where it doesn't take as much thinking on each shot because we are just familiar with the course. I think the girls take advantage of that at least as far as taking a mental load off."

Olivia Sorlie played the Jays' No. 1 spot, finishing with an 86 while the Jays' No. 2, Isabel LeFevre finished at 102. Aspen Humes finished the 18 holes with a 113 while freshmen McKenna Nieswaag and Belle Sjostrom rounded out the order with scores of 121 and 126.

Iliff said that having back to back tournaments for nine weeks straight, can be tiring and it can be difficult to find the time to work out the trouble areas as there aren't all that many practice days in between tournaments. The head coach mentioned that with the next couple of days, she is going to work with her team to try and work out any kinks they might be encountering, before they head to Bismarck.

Even though they did not finish where they were hoping too, results and overall placement is only part of the story when looking at the start of sports season.

"I know the girls have a good time," Iliff said. "Having the first one on the road is always fun because we're building some of those memories as a team and then to have a few days here is nice.

"But they are talking about their school schedules and I think they are anxious to see some more of their friends again so I think the whole getting back into the school thing I think most of them are excited about."
