Blue Jays' Olson loses in straight sets to Chu in state title match

Jun. 5—GRAND FORKS — Jamestown High School's Phoebe Olson took part in the 2022 NDHSAA Tournament on Saturday, June 4, at Choice Health and Fitness. Olson came into the tournament as the top seed from the west.

In the first round, Olson faced off against No. 8-seed from the east Shanley's Mary Wolf. Olson took down Wolf, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to the second round where she faced off against Sheyenne's Alyssa Sommerfeld. In the match against Sommerfeld, Olson continued her run of dominance winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. That win sent Olson to the state semifinals where she faced Davies' Paige McCormick and had to battle back from an early set loss, 0-6 and overcome a second set deficit of 2-5 to win 7-5. Once Olson overcame the second set deficit, she cruised in the third set 6-3 to advance to the state championship match. In the state championship match, Olson faced Sheyenne's Mimi Chu.

Chu got to the final after beating Dickinson's Lola Homiston, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. That set her up to face Minot's Halle Matison in the quarterfinals where Chu got a 6-0, 6-2 straight sets win. The semifinals saw Chu get a 6-1, 6-0, straight sets win over Davies' Marissa Burian.

The final went the way of Chu, who won the state title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Olson. The loss was only Olson's second loss in singles on the year, with the other loss also coming to Chu.
