Blue Jays, Region 3 athletes turn in solid showings Friday in Bismarck

May 28—All three of the Blue Jays who qualified in the 300 meter hurdles in Julia Skari, Bernadette Belzer and Preston Kroeber, got through the preliminary round Friday and are set to compete in the 300 meter hurdles finals on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Kroeber, the lone hurdler for the JHS boys' team, finished race in 40.74 seconds. Belzer and Skari tested each other in their heat, finishing within two seconds of each other. Skari edged out Belzer to finish first with a time of 45.93 while Belzer clinched her spot in the finals with a 47.33-second performance.

Yolanda Nabwe took off running and earned her spot in the 100-meter dash finals, finishing the stretch 0.01 seconds before her older sister Annie did. The sister duo will be the two representing the Jays in the sprint finals. Cece Deebom had the top time in the 100 prelims, finishing in 12.07 seconds.

Nabwe also secured a spot in the 100 hurdles finals.

"We had a great day," JHS co-head track and field coach Mike Dietz said. "This is our third meet over 60 degrees and that makes a big difference with our jumpers and throwers and sprinters."

Hunter Petersen finished out her prep high jump career with a sixth-place finish in high jump, launching herself over the bar that was set at 5 feet, 1 inch. Thomas Allmer added a trophy to his case, placing fourth in the discus, with a throw that cleared 157 feet, 6 inches of ground.

"Thomas did awesome in the throws again, Dietz said. "It's nice to see a senior compete as well as he has again. I am really happy with how everyone is performing so far and excited to see how our finals go tomorrow."

While those on the track were busy working to qualify for the Saturday finals, Kennedy Harter and the rest of those competing in field events were already nabbing their state-placer plaques.

Harter, a junior out of Kidder County, is a three-time state champion in the Class B girls triple jump and while that final is set for Saturday, she is off to a good start in the jumps. Over at long jump, Harter pulled out a jump that measured 16 feet, 7 inches — good enough for fifth place.

Harter's 4-foot-11 performance over at the high jump pit placed her seventh. Ellendale's Kaylin Slivoskey won the Class B high jump contest, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches.

Region 3 had two top-eight finishers in the boys high jump with EdgleyKM's Zeke Barnick and Logan Barnes of Linton/HMB each clearing the bar at 06-02. Barnick placed fourth while Barnes wound up sixth.

On Thursday, Norah Entzi, a junior out of Edgeley/KM, started off her state meet with a third-place in the 3200 meter run, finishing the eight laps in 11:52.67 — less than one second back of state runner up, Annika Stroh of Sargent County who finished in 11:51.89. Brynn Hanson, of Des Lacs-Burlington, the defending two-mile champ, did it again and cruised to a first-place finish, crossing the line at 11:44.20. Hanson is only an eighth-grader.

Over at the throws, Samantha Meehl of Oakes cracked her way into the top eight for discus, launching her disc 109 feet, 8 inches.

Carrington's Kael Kovar wound up eighth in the pole vault, launching himself to a height of 11 feet, 6 inches. Kovar was joined by two of his teammates over at the pole vault pits. Mercedes Lura vaulted her way to a second place finish while Hannah Wolsky picked up fifth-place honors.
