Blue Jays Roundup: Baseball splits with Mandan, will be back Thursday

May 11—Jack Bowman and the Jamestown High School baseball team made short work of Watford City on May 6, but after a couple of innings in Mandan Tuesday, the squad figured out Mandan wouldn't be a shoo-in for a second-straight series win.

The Blue Jays did manage to split with the Braves, falling 3-1 in game No. 1 of the conference doubleheader and coming back to win it 4-2 in the second game.

Jamestown will be back at Jack Brown Stadium on Thursday as they will go up against Minot. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

The Jays wound up fifth in their second WDA competition of the year at Madan's Prairie West Golf Course. Jamestown carded a team score of 338, 15 strokes better than their team score on Saturday. The squad was just three strokes back of Mandan.

Century won the invite, tallying a 311. Dickinson and Minot rounded out the top-three with scores of 313 and 316.

Head coach Shawn Taft and the crew will be back on the road Friday for another test over at Bismarck's Hawktree Golf Course. Golfers are expected to tee off at 10 a.m.

Andrew Walz led the Jays with a 7-over-79 while Easton Romsdal finished his 18 holes with an 88. The other four golfers representing the Jays: Hunter Gegelman, Camron Andersen, Jordan Dooley and Luke LeFevre, all finished the round under a 96.

Walz's score qualified him for the 2022 Class A State Individual Golf Tournament.

Haley Nelson has become known across the state for her gymnastics ability but this spring, she's proving to everyone that she can play soccer with the best of them.

Nelson tallied her second hattrick of the season to help the Jays pull out a 5-1 win over Bismarck Century to move up to the No. 3 spot in the WDA standings at 6-4.

Jamestown has now tallied five straight games won. The team has not lost since April 26 when they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Mandan.

The Jays are slated to face defending state champs, Minot, on Friday in the Magic City. On Saturday, the Blue Jays will travel to Williston to play the first-year varsity Coyote squad.

On Tuesday, Nelson got the Jays on the board first.

Securing the ball off an assist from Peyton Waliser, the senior captain buried the breakaway goal to give her team a 1-0 advantage with about 16 minutes gone in the first half.

The Patriots held the Jays to one goal for the remainder of the first but they couldn't keep the pressure applied in the second half.

Nelson had a part in every single goal made, scoring three of her own and assisting Claire Frohlich and Emma Hillerud on their scores.

Jamestown outshot Century 12-10. Both goalkeepers had nine saves.

The Jamestown High School tennis team's trip to the capital city did not go as head coach Paul Olson would have hoped.

The Jays wound up dropping a pair of WDA matches Tuesday, first falling to Bismarck High 6-3 and later dropping to Legacy 7-2.

"They are a good team," Olson said of Legacy.

The Blue Jays have dropped to 0-5 in the conference and 1-8 overall. Dickinson will be the Jays' next test. The Midgets are slated to visit the Buffalo City on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.

While it wasn't a team victory for the Jays, Phoebe Olson was solid for her team.

The senior No. 1 spot holder went 4-0 against her opponents on Tuesday, first blanking Bismarck High's Grace Haider 6-0, 6-0 and then cruising to a two-set win (6-0, 7-5) over Aleah McPherson of Legacy. Olson, along with her teammate Bria Nieswaag took the No. 1 doubles match in both duals.
