Blue Jays Roundup: Soccer goes up against Minot in Magic City

May 14—Jamestown was on a hot streak winning five straight games in the last two weeks but a match-up with the defending state champs proved to be a challenge a little too difficult for the Blue Jays to handle.

The Jays fell 5-1 to Minot Friday night, dropping its record to 6-5 in the West Region and 6-5 overall. The soccer squad is slated to cap off the weekend with a match against Williston. The game is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.

Jamestown kept it a one-score game in the first half, knocking with senior captain Haley Nelson knocking in the Jays' lone goal of the game to make it a 2-1 game at the half.

Final stats were unavailable when the Jamestown Sun went to press.

With two wins on the board at Fargo's Elephant Park, Jamestown was poised to win its second match of the season.

Edie Hegerle stepped up to the challenge.

The Blue Jay freshman got her first varsity win of the season Friday morning, defeating Wahpeton's Carmen Burvee 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the nonconference match for the Jays. The Blue Jays defeated the Huskies 3-2.

Jamestown went on to face Dickinson Friday afternoon. The Jays dropped 5-4 to the Midgets.

The Jays are now 2-9 overall and 0-6 in the WDA.

"Edie played extremely well stepping into the 3 singles spot," head coach Paul Olson said. "We're a little short-handed with Band Night in Bismarck, and she did great filling in that varsity spot. Mya (Henderson) played her best singles match of the season, too.'

Jamestown controlled the singles matches, with Phoebe Olson rattling off a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Liv Dodge at the No. 1 spot while Henderson cleaned up at the No. 2 spot, defeating Kyree Lacina 6-3, 6-1.

Jamestown is slated to participate in the West Fargo Sheyenne Invitational on Saturday.
