Blue Jays rout Yankees behind four homers
Teoscar Hernandez hit two home runs and had three RBIs and Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting New York Yankees 8-2 on Friday night.
Danny Jansen added a three-run homer and Randal Grichuk had a two-run blast for the Blue Jays, who have split the first two games of the four-game series.
Mike Tauchman and Mike Ford hit solo homers for the Yankees, who had a nine-game winning streak stopped.
Blue Jays right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (2-2) allowed one run, five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings.
Yankees left-hander J.A. Happ (9-7) allowed six runs, four hits and thee walks while striking out four in five innings.
Bo Bichette walked and Grichuk hit his 20th homer of the season in the first inning to give Toronto a 2-0 lead.
Hernandez hit his 16th homer of the season in the second and it was 3-0.
Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner was restrained from going after home plate umpire Chris Segal with two out in the fourth inning. Gardner was in the dugout when ejected, apparently for complaining about calls on balls and strikes. After Gardner's ejection, Tauchman hit his 12th homer of the season.
The Blue Jays took a 6-1 lead on Jansen's 10th homer of the season after first baseman DJ LeMahieu lost a routine pop foul in the twilight. Brandon Drury had doubled with two outs, moved to third on a wild pitch -- an out call at third that was reversed on a Blue Jays' challenge -- and Derek Fisher had walked.
The Yankees loaded the bases on two walks and LeMahieu's double in the fifth, but the threat ended when Bichette made a diving catch on a line drive by Didi Gregorius.
Tim Mayza replaced Reid-Foley and tossed a perfect sixth and gave up Ford's third homer in the seventh. Justin Shafer took over with one out to finish the inning.
Shafer retired one batter in the eighth before Buddy Boshers replaced him to retire the final two batters.
New York's Nestor Cortes Jr. allowed a walk and struck out two in two innings before Tommy Kahnle replaced him and allowed a two-run homer by Hernandez, his 17th.
Derek Law pitched around a ninth-inning single.
