Blue Valley West is your Kansas 6A state champion: Baseball scores and results

A Blue Valley school was guaranteed to bring home the Kansas 6A state championship by the time Friday evening rolled around.

That school? No. 2 seed Blue Valley West (20-5), which capped off an impressive season with a 3-2 championship win over eighth-seeded Blue Valley North (13-12), which shook up the state tournament by taking down top-seeded Manhattan in the quarterfinal round.

Eighth-seeded North advanced into the championship game with a 5-2 win over No. 5 seed Derby (15-10) in the semifinal round.

In the other semifinal, Lawrence Free State (18-7) came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Blue Valley West, with the decisive run coming on a passed ball. Free State earned the third-place win over Derby 8-1 at Hoglund Stadium in Lawrence.

Here are scores from the semifinal and final rounds in Kansas...

Class 5A

Bishop Carroll (24-1) capped off a near-flawless season with a 7-6 championship game victory over De Soto (21-4) Friday evening.

The No. 1 seed Bishop Carroll scraped past Eisenhower 4-3 in the semifinal round, as fifth-seeded Eisenhower ended its season at 18-6 with a loss in the third-place game to No. 3 seed St. Thomas Aquinas (21-4).

The third seed won the third-place game 11-1 after falling to second-seeded De Soto 12-2 in the semifinal round at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium.

Class 4A

Chanute (16-9) and McPherson (21-4) met to determine the state championship winner at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina. It was third-seeded McPherson that emerged with a 6-0 win to take the state title on Friday.

The No. 8 seed Chanute reached the final after a 1-0 win over No. 4 seed Fort Scott (18-7), which won its third-place game against Paola 10-9 in eight innings.

No. 7 seed Paola (15-10) fell 9-2 to McPherson in the semifinal round.

Class 3A

The odds might have seemed against Collegiate (22-4) after the No. 4 seed survived a 9-8 thriller against top-seeded Humboldt in one of Friday’s Class 3A semifinal games at K-State’s Tointon Family Stadium in Manhattan.

Especially when second-seeded Columbus, a 10-0 winner over No. 3 seed Santa Fe Trail on Friday, was sitting on the other side of the bracket.

Instead, Collegiate capped off the championship run with a 6-4 victory over Columbus (22-3) to bring the state title just down the road to Wichita.

Santa Fe Trail (21-3) won the third-place game over No. 1 seed Humboldt (23-2) 9-1.

Class 2-1A

The Great Bend Sports Complex saw a special run to the state championship game from No. 8 seed St. Mary’s Colgan, which would’ve finished the year .500 with a first-round loss to top-seeded Little River.

Instead, the Pittsburg school won the quarterfinal 12-5 ... won the semifinal over No. 4 seed Onaga 10-0 ... and then won the whole thing with a 13-3 win over No. 3 seed Marion (21-3).

St. Mary’s Colgan finished the year 15-11. No. 4 seed Onaga finished the year 19-5.

In the third place game, No. 2 seed Elkhart (22-2) rebounded from a 16-8 semifinal loss to Marion to defeat Onaga 3-2.
