Blue Wahoos Baseball: Saturday Movie Night Highlights Busy Week at Blue Wahoos Stadium

Blue Wahoos are hosting a prelude to schools being out for the summer with a movie night Saturday featuring Disney hit film Encanto.

In between the longest home stretch of the season for the Blue Wahoos, the ballpark has stayed busy.

This week has included eight events in a seven-day period, highlighted by Saturday’s family movie night, featuring the 2021 Disney hit film, Encanto, to be shown on the videoboard.

The movie will begin at 7 p.m. The stadium gates open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 with seating available on the field or in the chair-back rows within the stadium bowl.

The animated musical comedy Encanto was a box office success when making its debut in November 2021. The soundtrack, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” rose to No. 1 on the US Billboard Top 200 and UK Compilation Albums.

“Kids love it, so we think this will be a great way to have a family movie event, right before everyone gets out of school next week in our area,” said Shannon Reeves, the Blue Wahoos events sales manager.  “We’re kinda looking at this as a kickoff to the summer and it’s our first Saturday night movie on our new field.

“It is one of the newest released movies that the licensing company we use had available,” Reeves said. “We just did it in Beloit (Wisconsin) with our partner team (Beloit Sky Carp) and that was a big success, so we are excited to do it here.”

The Blue Wahoos movie night will be followed by another one on June 11.

This week’s variety of events have followed the Blue Wahoos past homestand where they produced a six-game sweep of the Rocket City Trash Pandas. They entered Thursday night’s road game in Montgomery seeking a franchise-tying eighth consecutive win.

The team returns to begin on May 24 a set of back-to-back home series, beginning with the first one against the Mississippi Braves that leads into Memorial Day weekend.

The ballpark has stayed busy in the interim with a variety of public and private events. Pensacola Catholic High’s graduation ceremony was held Thursday night at the stadium for the third consecutive year.

The Booker T. Washington High baseball team had a season-ending dinner party Tuesday at the Hancock-Whitney Club.

On Sunday morning there will be a second, “Seventh Inning Stretch Ballpark Yoga” session with partner Disko Lemonade beginning at 9 a.m. open to the public with admission at $12.

That will be followed by a private company outing later in the day.

“There is a lot of demand for events here, which is great,” Reeves said. “The inquires we get are increasing. And with people learning about the opportunities to host various events here, it seems positive word of mouth is spreading.

“When the team is away, we just try to pack as much as we can in here. We have the space to hold a wide variety of events.”

Blue Wahoos Stadium will hold its second Yoga event on Sunday morning at the ballpark open to the public.

Saturday’s movie night will be the second one on the new synthetic playing surface. Just like the one held April 14, there will be no food or beverage allowed on the field.

People will be able to consume food and beverages purchased at the concession stands by sitting in seats, or the concourse area, or the Hancock Whitney Club.

On the field, however, people may sit on blankets but without food or drinks at their side.

“We learned we have to keep an eye on that just for the safety of the field,” Reeves said. “We made a big investment on that synthetic field and we have to maintain it to perfection.

“We feel like we have plenty of seats and areas at the ballpark where people can eat.”
