Blue Water Area bowling: Campbell wins singles tourney; Medley rolls 300

Doug Campbell captured his first Senior Singles tournament title last weekend at Port Huron Lanes. After qualifying ninth, Campbell eliminated four opponents in the bracket finals, including runner-up Rosann Brachel in the concluding match. Brachel had a 644 qualifying series and then opened the finals with a punishing 241 to issue an early exit to two-time champion Henry Sullivan. In the semifinals, Campbell defeated another two-time champion Richard Mansfield. Tom Schmitt was the other bowler to make it to the final four.

The round of eight also included Henry Brown, Dan Hawley Sr, Scott Badley and Jeff Meldrum who, with a 736, was the only bowler to top 700 for the three qualifying games. Meldrum stayed hot with a 269 to defeat Steve Jakubowski in the first round of the finals. Troy Brast was the top qualifier with handicap, thanks to a 299 in game three when a ringing 10 pin cost him his first perfect game. Brast had the second-best scratch qualifying series with a 690, but was then upset in the first round of the finals by Brown. Greg Marshall rounds out the top three scratch qualifying scores with a 687.

In league play, Nick Medley posted the only award score of the week as he tossed his second 300 game. This one came in the Tuesday Classic league at Strikers Entertainment Center where he ended with a 705 series. His prior perfect game was last season at Colony Bowl, also in the month of October. Tom Bruehan made a strong bid at perfection with a 297 game in Friday Wanna Bees at Port Huron Lanes.

Tom Morris finished 42nd in qualifying in the Senior Singles tournament (out of a field of 42). Instead of packing up the bowling balls and heading to a nice restaurant or some other non-bowling entertainment, he subbed in the Saturday Nite Bridge league and threw a 710 series (215 pin improvement on his earlier three-game total). Then, the next morning, to emphasize his turnaround, he threw the high series of the week with a 761 along with a 287 game in 3-B4-1.

Amanda Long emphatically displayed the most talent for the women with a 670 series in Saturday Nite Bridge. She had games of 258 and 244 in that set. Three others topped 600, including Stephanie Freeman with a 627 and Jill Friis 623, both at Port Huron Lanes. Terry Crampton shot 621 at St. Clair River Lanes and added a 590 with a 243 game at Colony Bowl.

Brad Ashton paced the PHL Early 4 Man league with an outstanding 758 series. Cliff Crawford led Saturday Nite Bridge and Cowboys & Indians with series of 746 and 734, respectively. Chad Jeroue fired a 743 in 3-B4-1. Cody Hawks topped all bowlers in the Juanita Peter Memorial league with a 735 series that included a 280 game. Other strong series were Ed Crampton 734, James Wood 733, Chuck Ouellette 733, Scott Dedoe 726, Tom Bruehan 721, Greg Urben 716, and Joe Tocco 711.

Casey Donnenworth and Chad Jeroue each pitched 289 games. Chuck Ouellette had 288. They were followed by Dave Fuller 279, Greg Urben 279, Eddie Crampton 278, Matt Pawlak 278, Adam Ladensack 278, Rufus Brown 277, James Wood 277, and John Helwig 275.

Karen Watzek and Debbie Turck led the rest of the women high games as each threw 234. Kate Beck had a 233. Others were Sharon Pappas 225, Jill Friis 224, Rosann Brachel 224, Jean Kless 223, Heather Bombard 223, Stephanie Freeman 222, Jennifer Klein 221 and Terry Crampton 220.

The balance of the high series were Sharon Pappas 598, Kristie Lashbrook 596, Heather Bombard 592 & 590 & 578, Debbie Turck 585 and Karley Kirkendall 583.

Special Mention: Sue Pocklington achieved her first 200 game with a 220 in the Lysle Smith Memorial league at Port Huron Lanes.
