Blue Water Area bowling: Hojnacki, Langolf win doubles for fifth time

Jesse Hojnacki and Matt Langolf fairly easily won the Match Game Doubles tournament at Colony Bowl on Dec. 3-4. They were also champions last year, making this the second time they’ve gone back-to-back as they won in 2017 and 2018 also. Their first time winning was in 2009. During the 10-game finals, Hojnacki averaged 236 leading them to eight wins and a final point total of 4,825.

Michael Ganhs and Jose Ganhs won five of their matches and finished a distant second place at 4,478. One pin further behind in third place was Chuck Ouellette and Cliff Crawford, who won six matches. The top qualifiers, Jeff Meldrum and Dave Black, finished fourth after winning five matches and accumulating 4,432 points. Dave Klaas and Steve Lewicki took seven of their matches, including the final five to finish fifth among the finalists with 4,380 points.

Sixth place went to Lenny McIntyre and Chad Rich after they made a nice recovery, starting with five losses before winning four of their final five and ending with 4,357. The next three teams in the standings all won four of their matches, including Jerry Hendrick/Travis Hollis in seventh (4,296), Brian Boulier/Mark Welsh in eighth (4,257) and Justin Badley/Scott Badley in ninth (4,175). The 10th-place team, Dylan Jacobs and Mike Gossman, finished with three wins and 4,076 points.

In league play, Courtney VanBuskirk shot a 220 game in the Zebraettes league at Bowl O Drome that was more than twice her average. She was a phenomenal 116 pins over average in that game. Jackie Karl led all women with a 247 in the Don McIvor Memorial league at Port Huron Lanes. Her outstanding week also included the second-best series as she rolled a 640, with a 227 game, in Cowboys & Indians. Anita Hubbard was second with a 245, 76 pins over average, in the Ladies City league at St. Clair River Lanes.

Nick Conard owned the high series of the week with a 787 in the PHL Early 4 Man where he threw 22 of the first 24 for strikes. Conard started with 11 in a row and a 298 in game one. In game two, he spared in the first frame and then rattled off another 11 in a row for a 290 game. The second-best series also came from that session as Don Purdy shot a 761 that included a 276 game. Dan Hawley Jr rounds out the top three with his league-leading 756 in Cowboys & Indians. Hawley’s 289 game in that set was second in the league to Mike Gossman’s 290. Gossman finished second with a 740 series.

Jerry Beery paced the McIvor league with a 743 series. Kyle Gest was out front in Tuesday Classic at Strikers Entertainment Center with a 741 series. Craig Verbeke led Monday Big 12 at St. Clair as he put together a 739 series. Travis Hollis had a 739 of his own in the McIvor league while Brian Hayes logged a 730. Other strong series were Steven White 728, Mike Kelch 728, Bob Pihaylic 725, Adam Digon 723, Jose Ganhs 722, John Galvin 722, Andy Schultz 720, Kurt Salter 719, Jeff Meldrum 718, Rufus Brown 716, PJ Hollis 716, Kevin Churchill 715 and Justin Badley 711.

Rosann Brachel claimed high series for the women with a 649 in 3-B4-1 at Port Huron Lanes. Her high game in that set was 236. Ally Irvine led the women of Saturday Nite Bridge with her 620 series that included a 233 game. Terry Crampton pitched a 618 series with a nice 243 game in Monday Big 12. Heather Bombard was also a league leader with a 607 series in the McIvor league. The rest of the top series were Joddy Swoffer 597, Steph Palmateer 594, Amanda Long 594 & 574, Brenda Tack 585, Anita Hubbard 585, Shawna Lentner 583, Jill Friis 582, Alyssa Crampton 581, Deanna Worden 578, Tara Barnes 573, Stephanie Freeman 571, Irene Simmons 570 and Lee-Ann Hill 570.

Adam Digon fired a 289 game in Tuesday Classic. Four bowlers achieved 279 games, including Jeff Krauss, Scott Wagar, Craig Verbeke, and Dale Camphausen. Other standout games were Kyle Gest 278, Travis Hollis 278, Eddie Crampton 277, Brian Hayes 276, Anthony Thomason 275, and Andy Schultz 270.

Back to the women, Joddy Swoffer tossed a 235 game in the McIvor league. Deanna Worden had a 230 game in the Wednesday Night league at Colony Bowl. They were followed by Heather Bombard 229, Kristin Winkler 226, Kathleen Smith 226, Jessica Badley 224, Irene Simmons 224, Brenda Tack 223 and Shawna Lentner 221.

Special mention: Don Brunelle recorded a triplicate 200 in Saturday Nite Bridge at Port Huron Lanes. Karen Rock rolled a triplicate 111 in the Zebraettes league at Bowl O Drome.

Upcoming tournaments: Senior Doubles is Saturday, Jan. 14 at Strikers Entertainment Center. All bowlers must be 50 or older. Qualifying starts at noon and the finals immediately follow. Entry forms for all tournaments are at local bowling centers or online at phba.net.
