Bluefield facing affordable housing shortage
BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) — The city of Bluefield in Mercer County held a meeting to discuss an affordable housing crisis.
A quick search of 24701 on Apartments.com reveals just two places in Bluefield, West Virginia currently available for rent. Trulia.com shows a few more, bringing the total to nine.
The city planning committee discussed solutions for the lack of affordable housing within the city on Tuesday evening, January 30, 2024.
“The need for affordable housing here in Bluefield is very significant,” said Gabrielle Ponder, Executive Assistant to the City Manager. “We’re at capacity with our local income housing authorities which is CASE WV and the Bluefield Housing Authority, they are both at capacity, so the need for affordable housing is very, very significant.”

Ponder told 59News the city is looking at several solutions at this point.
“Our hope is that the general public here in Bluefield will be very happy to know that we’re taking strides on addressing this concern of affordable housing,” said Ponder.
