Country and bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs is returning to Ponte Vedra.

Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder are set to perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, 1050 A1A N. Skaggs has played in Ponte Vedra several times, with the latest being in December 2021.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24 at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre box office and ticketmaster.com. Prices range from $46 to $66. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays. The box office accepts credit and debit card payments only.

Kentucky Thunder includes Russ Carson on banjo; Jake Workman on lead guitar; Dennis Parker on baritone vocals, guitar; Jeff Picker on bass, bass vocals; Mike Rogers on tenor vocals, rhythm guitar; and Billy Contreras on fiddle.

Skaggs started playing the mandolin at age 5 and took the stage with bluegrass legend Bill Monroe at age 6.

Among other honors, he is a 15-time Grammy winner and was the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year in 1985. He also joined the Country Music Hall of Fame, Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and National Fiddler Hall of Fame in 2018, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2016 and Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Donald Trump in 2021. 

His debut album “Waitin' for the Sun to Shine,” released in May 1981, reached No. 2 on U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums. Skaggs produced the album. “Highways & Heartaches,” his third album from Epic Records, was his first of several to reach No. 1.  

The day after playing in Ponte Vedra Beach, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder will perform at the Yeehaw Music Fest on Jan. 21 in Okeechobee.
