BMW Again Breaks Sales Record

BMW Motorrad has closed the first half-year with a new sales record for the fourth time in succession.

According to the Bavarian manufacturer, some 80,754 motorcycles and maxi scooters were supplied to customers worldwide as of June 2016, increasing upon the previous year’s sales (78,418 units) by 3 percent. For the first time ever, BMW sold more than 80,000 vehicles in the first six-month period of a year.

“Based on this positive development we will now strive to achieve another sales record for the year as a whole,” said Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad’s head of sales and marketing.

BMW’s strongest growth came in European markets, particularly in Spain, Italy and France. Germany remains the traditionally largest market for BMW Motorrad, where it is the overall market leader. In the relevant segment over 500cc capacity, the brand also leads the market in Spain, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Brazil and South Africa.

The R1200GS and R1200GSA continue to dominate BMW sales, with a combined 26,362 models going out the door in the first six months of the year. With those two bikes taking the top slots, the rest of BMW’s top six best sellers look like this:

Third: S1000XR (5,480 units)
Fourth: S1000RR (5,291 units)
Fifth: R1200RT (5,123 units)
Sixth: RnineT (4,629 units)

BMW says the RnineT has “far surpassed expectations in terms of its sales figures,” which no doubt fuels the brand’s desire to create a number of variants.

The brand also says it expects its current sales success to continue into the second part of the year, especially as it plans to release both the new RnineT Scrambler and G310R in the autumn.
