It's no secret: The manual transmission is a dying breed. While enthusiasts love to shift gears themselves, manufacturers are finding it harder and harder to justify keeping three-pedal options around. BMW, though, seems committed to the stick shift, at least until 2030.

CarBuzz caught up with M boss Frank van Meel at a recent event at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa and asked where the brand stood on the manual transmission.

"The manual is, unfortunately, not so widespread anymore," van Meel told CarBuzz. "It's more in the segments of the M2 and M3, and the M4. And for those cars, we continue offering the manual, and those cars will run for a long time until the end of this decade," said van Meel.

As CarBuzz points out, current product cycles mean the new M2 should remain available until 2030. But the M3 and M4 are slightly behind, with new versions expected by 2028. Whether the new version will actually have a stick is up in the air. Of course, van Meel added that the manual will stick around as long as customers demand it. So if you want three-pedal options to remain available, be sure to put your money where your mouth is next time you buy a new car.
