BMW Reportedly Working on 1000-HP Electric M5
BMW's next-generation M5 sedan will come in two versions: electric or plug-in hybrid, the U.K.'s Car Magazine reports.
The electric M5 will use three electric motors, producing around 1000 horsepower, and the hybrid will use a twin-turbo V-8 making around 750 horsepower, according to the report.
BMW's goal is to have 25 electric vehicles in its lineup by 2023.
Porsche has the Taycan Turbo S, which is the quickest four-door we've ever tested. Audi is getting set to reveal the 590-hp e-tron GT, and of course there's Tesla. But BMW, whose M5 Competition sedan rocketed to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds during Car and Driver testing, doesn't have a gut-punching electric vehicle, at least not yet. It is working on electric versions of the 3-series, 5-series, 7-series, and X1, but, based on a report from the U.K. magazine Car, it could also be working on an electric M5 packing up to 1000 horsepower.
The next-generation 5-series sedan, which will have electric and hybrid models, is set to debut in the second half of 2023. The new M5, supposedly also with electric and plug-in-hybrid models, will follow in 2024, Car says. The electric M5 will reportedly utilize three 335-hp electric motors, one driving the front wheels and two in the rear. The total output will be around 1000 horsepower.
The most powerful version of the 2021 BMW M5 is the Competition variant, which is powered by a 617-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. The most powerful version of the Porsche Taycan, the Turbo S, has two electric motors that produce 750 horsepower, and the Tesla Model S Performance makes 778 horses from its two electric motors. So BMW might be able to take back the quickest-four-door title in the next few years.
Plug-In Hybrid Also Expected
Luckily for those who aren't ready for the death of internal combustion in the M5, there will also be a plug-in-hybrid version. This M5 will allegedly use the same powertrain as the upcoming X8 M SUV: a hybrid twin-turbo V-8 powertrain producing around 750 horsepower sending thrust to all four wheels. Car and Driver contacted BMW, but a spokesman declined to comment on whether or not the electric and hybrid are in the works.
The electric 5-series isn't the only EV BMW is working on. BMW has said it is aiming to have 25 electric vehicles on the road by 2023. This includes the the BMW i3, i4, iX3, iNext, 5-series, 7-series, and X1 as well as the Mini Cooper SE.
