On Tuesday, BMW shared its fresh take on the classic motorcycle: The BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster offers a tentative glimpse at the future.

The bike debuted at the company's NEXTGen event in Munich.

In a news release regarding the motorcycle, BMW presented two questions: As the company moves forward with electrification what would a BMW electric motorcycle look like? And, how would it appear so that it was clearly a BMW at first look?

The BMW Group suggests they have answered their own questions with the designs for the BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster, which the release called "a highly emotional naked bike with electric drive."

Antonia Cecchetti, spokesperson for BMW, said in an email to USA TODAY that the design is a "Vision Bike." It won't be mass-produced but is a design study of what BMW envisions a motorcycle to be.

"There are no plans to put the vision bike into series production in exactly this form, but it is conceivable that some of the design aspects may be taken up in future BMW Motorrad models," said Cecchetti.

For more than 90 years, the BMW Motorrad has run on a two-cylinder boxer engine. The motor, BMW said in the release, is the key element of the bike's design.

While the design requirements for installing an electric system are different than those of installing a conventional motor, BMW said it found a way to make a transition to the electric function while keeping the same look.

The BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster has "architecture that visually echoes the history of BMW Motorrad while at the same time taking it a step further," according to the release.

The new design provides a new experience for riders due to its high-level torque, Edgar Heinrich, head of design for BMW Motorrad said in the release.

"This almost brutal power delivery creates a whole new experience of dynamic performance," said Heinrich. "And the BMW Motorrad Vision DC Roadster puts a face to this experience.”
