BMX star, X Games medalist Pat Casey killed in riding accident at 29

BMX star and X Games medalist Pat Casey was killed Tuesday afternoon in a motocross riding accident.

The 29-year-old was attempting a trick at Slayground Motorcross Park, a private track in Ramona, Calif., when he lost control and fell off his bike, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office said. Casey had no pulse when paramedics arrived and could not be resuscitated.

“Deputies and paramedics attempted life-saving measures. However, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said in a release. The sheriff’s office added that the investigation into how Casey crashed was ongoing.

Casey lived in Riverside, Calif. with his wife, Chase, and two children, 8-year-old son Reid and 7-year-old daughter Tatum.

“The world lost one of the baddest to ever do it,” fellow pro BMX rider T.J. Lavin captioned a memorial to Casey on Instagram.

More tributes poured in on Casey’s own Instagram posts.

Casey won gold in BMX Dirt and silver in BMX Park at the 2021 X Games, and medaled at the 2012 (bronze in BMX Park) X Games as well. He placed fifth in BMX Park Best Trick and ninth in BMX Park at the X Games in Japan in May. He likely would have competed in the upcoming July X Games events in California.

“We are deeply saddened by Pat Casey’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, parents and siblings,” the X games wrote on Instagram. “A true legend in the action sports community, Pat will always be a member of the X Games family and an inspiration to everyone’s life he touched.”
