Board approves bids for demolition of stadium at Amarillo fairgrounds

The Amarillo-Potter Events Venue District Board of Directors on Monday approved two vendors for the demolition and abatement of the former Potter County Memorial Stadium.

The board awarded a total of $198,507 to Lloyd Nabors Demolition LLC and Arlo Environmental to tear down the almost 74-year-old stadium on the grounds adjacent to the Tri-State Fairgrounds.

Lloyd Nabors Demolition LLC out of Hutchins, Texas near Dallas was awarded a $175,000 demolition contract over one other bidder by scoring way higher for a lower cost for the demolition of the stadium. Their bid was about $125,000 lower than the competitor's bid for the demolition project, according to board members. Arlo Environmental, out of Amarillo, was awarded $23,507 for abatement and clearance of the site, scoring twice as high for best value bid over two other contractors for the project. Along with coming in at the lowest cost, Arlo scored high for its reputation, quality and long-term cost over other bidders.

Having been used in the past for various demolition projects by the city, Lloyd Nabors Demolition LLC was chosen over a local contractor by scoring 232 points out of a possible 300 points for the best value bid compared to 199.25 for the local contractor. The cost of the project bid became the determining factor, with Lloyd Nabors LLC scoring higher on its over 40% lower bid than the local competitor.

Since its opening on May 12, 1949, the stadium had been home to various minor league teams and the West Texas A&M Baseball Team. It hosted the Amarillo Gold Sox from 1959 to 1982, the Amarillo Dillas of the United Baseball League from 1994-2010 and the Amarillo Sox/Thunderheads from 2011 to 2015. Its last tenant was the now-defunct Texas Air Hogs, which split home games between Amarillo and Grand Prairie.

The stadium has sat empty and has been further deteriorating since the city built a new downtown baseball stadium for the Amarillo Sod Poodles, a AA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Once demolition and cleanup is complete, the land will be made available for other projects that may be included in the Tri-State Fairgrounds Masterplan, which is still in development.
