Get On Board The World's First Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Trains
Get on board the world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger trains, in Germany. The future is now, well yesterday, as that’s when the first hydrogen-powered train line opened.
Not just one, but 14 hydrogen-powered passenger trains will hit the rails on the Bremervörde, Lower Saxony route. Five of them started carrying passengers Wednesday and all 14 expect to be on the line in the next few months.

In all, the project cost about $92 million. Together the owners of the railway, Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LVNG ) along with the builders Alstom, operators Elbe-Weser Railways and Transport Company (EVB), and gas and engineering company Linde all came together on this collaboration. After seeking alternatives to diesel starting in 2012 this project has been ten years in the making. It is now ready for its first runs.
The details:
The trains are emission free and can run over 600 miles on one tank. The trains run at about the same speed Amtrak does, at about 50 to 75 miles per hour. Top speed being 87 mph. Just one third of a gallon of hydrogen fuel can do three times as much work as one gallon of diesel.
Here’s how it works:
Sixty four high pressure storage tanks as well as two fuels pumps and six hydrogen compressors make up the filling station for the world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger trains. The President of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil was quoted as saying, the hydrogen-powered passenger trains are, “a milestone on the road to climate neutrality in the transport sector.”
