Bob Costas Officially Parts Ways with NBC 'Quietly and Happily' After 40 Years

Bob Costas is officially leaving NBC.

The legendary sportscaster and 28-time Emmy Award-winning journalist is wrapping up a 40-year career at the network, according to the New York Post.

“It’s all settled quietly and happily for all concerned,” Costas, 66, told the publication.

Costas also told the Post that he will continue to work for the MLB Network, and added that he is thinking about starting a new interview show.

“If I do anything else, it will be a hybrid of my HBO show [On the Record with Bob Costas] and Later,” Costas said.

“I have some possibilities, but I have to decide what I want to do,” he added.

PEOPLE is out to Costas and NBC for comment.

The confirmation follows months of speculation that the sportscaster was exiting. In August, USA Today reported that Costas and his reps had discussions with NBC about ending his contract — which ran through 2021 — early.

“There was a very long period of time when NBC’s programming suited my interests and abilities very well, from Later, to the news magazines, to baseball, the NBA and the Olympics,” Costas told the outlet in a pair of phone calls. “And after deciding on my own to leave the Olympics after having done a dozen of them, you just look around and say, ‘What was once a perfect fit no longer fits that description.'”

Costas, who joined NBC in 1979, had hosted every Olympics on NBC since 1992 before stepping down for the 2018 Winter Olympics in February.

While Costas did not reveal his final settlement, he told the Post that his contract was reconciled “more than fairly.”
