Musicals built on the songs of Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson open and close the newly announced Hennepin Theatre Trust 2023-2024 Broadway on Hennepin season.

Seven-show subscription packages start at $299 and are on sale now at hennepintheatretrust.org, by phone at 800-859-7469 or in person at the State Theatre box office in downtown Minneapolis. Tickets for individual shows will go on sale at later dates. All shows will take place at the Orpheum Theatre.

Written by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, “Girl from the North Country” (Oct. 8-14) is set in 1934 Duluth as America is in the grip of the Great Depression. It debuted in London in 2017 to much acclaim, with the Evening Standard calling it “beguiling and soulful and quietly, exquisitely, heartbreaking. This is, in short, a very special piece of theater.”

The musical opened on Broadway in 2020 and the new touring version makes its debut in Minneapolis. McPherson is set to write and direct a film adaptation with Olivia Colman, Woody Harrelson, Chloe Bailey and Tosin Cole starring.

“MJ” (May 14-26, 2024) is a jukebox musical that uses Jackson’s biggest hits to tell the story of the late superstar as he was preparing for his Dangerous World Tour. It opened in December 2021 and has been a financial success, with a gross of $88.1 million and an attendance of 611,000. It also won four Tony Awards, but received mixed reviews, with some critics calling the book by Lynn Nottage bland and preachy.

The rest of the season includes:

  • A new take on Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Company” (Nov. 14-19), which won five Tony Awards including best revival of a musical.

  • A musical adaptation of the 1993 Robin Williams comedy “Mrs. Doubtfire” (Dec. 19-24).

  • The touring version of Jule Styne and Bob Merrill’s “Funny Girl” (Jan. 16-21), which is also currently running on Broadway with Lea Michele in the starring role.

  • The interactive musical “Clue” (Feb. 27-March 3, 2024), which is based on the popular board game, and 1985 film, of the same name.

  • The ever-popular Disney musical “The Lion King” (March 27-April 28, 2024), which made its debut at the Orpheum in 1997.

HTT will also present productions of Disney’s “Aladdin” (Dec. 5-10) and the ABBA musical “Mamma Mia!” (Feb. 6-11, 2024) that can be added to subscription package.
