Former Cincinnati Bearcats head coach Bob Huggins had an interesting answer to a question about his future after the West Virginia Mountaineers' NCAA tournament first-round loss to Maryland on Thursday.

"I got people who think I should stay on for quite a while, and there's people probably thinking I ought to pack it in and let some young kid come in and screw it up," Huggins said, per wvsportsnow.com's Ethan Bock.

When Syracuse's Jim Boeheim stepped down earlier this month, Huggins became the winningest active Div. I head coach with 934 wins.

In January, Huggins named DerMarr Johnson an assistant coach for WVU. Johnson, who played for Huggins' Bearcats during the 1999-2000 season, had served as UC's director of player development since 2021.

Huggins, whose record as UC's head coach from 1989 to 2005 was 399-127, was a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022 inductee.

Huggins completed his 16th season with the Mountaineers. He agreed in 2021 to a two-year contract extension as WVU's head coach that includes an option to step aside after the 2023-24 season.

Xavier defeated WVU in December at Cintas Center as part of the 2022 Big East–Big 12 Battle, with Huggins telling reporters before the game that he doesn't "have any good thoughts of Xavier whatsoever."
