Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston and Bob Odenkirk have paid tribute to co-star Mark Margolis, after it was announced that the actor had died at the age of 83.

Margolis may be best known for his role as drug kingpin Hector Salamanca in the drama and its prequel series Better Call Saul, but he has also appeared in Scarface, Requiem for a Dream, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Gotham and Your Honor, amongst many other projects. He died in a hospital in New York City after a short illness, with his wife and son at this bedside.

On Instagram, Cranston wrote in tribute: "I am very saddened today to learn of a friend’s passing. Mark Margolis was a really good actor and a lovely human being.

"Fun and engaging off the set, and (in the case of Breaking Bad and Your Honor) intimidating and frightening on set. His quiet energy belied his mischievous nature and curious mind… And he loved sharing a good joke. I miss him already. Rest now, Mark and thank you for your friendship and your exceptional body of work."

Over on Twitter, Odenkirk shared a post from Breaking Bad's official account, which called Salamanca "one of the most unforgettable characters in the history of television", and added his own words of memoriam.

His tweet reads: "A powerful screen presence! Mark made me laugh in the van on the way to set with his jokes and comments and I only hope I have half his energy and focus when “Action” was shouted. Thank you, Mark, and condolences to your family."

All seasons of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are available to stream now on Netflix.
