Boca Stage theater company relocates to Delray Beach Playhouse

DELRAY BEACH — Come October, three new productions will hit the stage at Delray Beach Playhouse. You can thank Boca Stage for that.

After five years of residence at the Sol Theatre in Boca Raton, the award-winning theater company will relocate to the Delray Beach Playhouse to accommodate the subscriber base it has amassed through past seasons. The move will double the audience capacity from 70 to more than 140.

"We saw an opportunity to coexist and share responsibilities," said Keith Garsson, artistic director and founder of Boca Stage. Through the partnership, Boca Stage will have the help of the Playhouse with operations such as marketing, manning a box office and concessions.

The company is known for a wide array of works. These range from topical to timely to edgy to classic and comedic productions. Its programming is geared toward audiences of all ages. And recent productions, Garsson said, have garnered excellent reviews and full houses.

Boca Stage’s productions will be performed in the black box/cabaret hall of the Playhouse.

After 5 years and much hand-wringing, Boca's Mizner Park will transform into performing arts center

“We are anxious to provide additional quality productions to add to this historical venue, which has served the larger community for over half a century,” Garsson said.

Delray Beach Playhouse first opened its doors in 1947

The Delray Beach Playhouse, which opened in 1947, has become a beloved staple among South Florida’s theatrical community. The addition of Boca Stage will bring even more audiences to its established year-round and seasonal base.

“We think everybody should go to as much theater as possible,” Garsson said. “Movies have a live audience, but theater is a live audience plus live performers.”

Forty-seven years after Frederick Knott's classic suspense thriller Wait Until Dark premiered on Broadway (it became a star turn for Audrey Hepburn in the 1967 film), Jeffery Hatcher has adapted Knott’s 1966 version, changing its setting. In 1944 Greenwich Village, a blind but capable Susan Hendrix finds herself in danger when three men enter her apartment. She soon realizes her blindness may be her key to freedom. The play will be directed by Garsson.

  • Boeing Boeing (Jan. 19-28, 2024)

In this 1960s comedy by Marc Camoletti about airlines and timetables, a Parisian named Bernard has three fiancées: one Italian, one German and one American. All are beautiful airline hostesses. Unexpected schedule changes bring the three to his apartment in Paris, at the same time. The play will be directed by Garsson and will star actress Angie Radosh.

  • America’s Sexiest Couple (April 19-28, 2024)

Two well-known South Florida actors, Kim Ostrenko and Wayne LeGette, reunite for the first time in 25 years after being "America’s Sexiest Couple" on a popular 1990s sitcom. They face a lifetime of unresolved issues, longings and regrets. But the network wants to reboot the show and they must figure out where to go from there. The play will be directed by Genie Croft.

The season’s tickets already are on sale. They launched about a week ago and can be purchased here.
