Bochetto: 'Politics is an adversarial system'

George Bochetto, candidate, U.S. Senate (R)

What, if any, reforms to election law would you support to ensure voters have equal access to free, fair, secure elections?

The integrity of our elections is absolutely crucial. And all Americans should have confidence that all lawful votes will count, but only lawful votes will count. For these reasons, I support repeal of measures allowing no excuse mail voting, unsupervised drop boxes, and inadequate election infrastructure to verify the identity of voters. In place of these partisan measures, I support a return to in-person voting with reasonable voter ID requirement as exists for so many other purposes.

What will you do to address energy costs?

As is commonly understood, costs go up when supplies are restricted. I will support the full development of Pennsylvania’s bountiful energy resources.

What makes you tick? Give me an example of when your passion and government service worked hand in hand?

It has been my honor to represent the family of fallen Philadelphia police officer, Daniel Faulkner, in their struggle against those anti-police forces seeking the release from prison of his murderer, Mumia Abu-Jamal.

What would you do to improve the nation’s criminal justice system?

It is imperative the federal justice system step in where local prosecutors have abandoned their communities by refusing to prosecute most crimes. The violent criminal destroying the quality of life in communities across Pennsylvania and the country must know that their crimes will be punished.

What are the bounds of political rhetoric? What duty do elected leaders have to speak truthfully and communicate fact-based information to voters?

I’ve spent a lifetime as a trial lawyer. As in our courts, our politics is an adversarial system in which people advocate for different points of view with the idea that the whole truth is formed within this competition of ideas. Advocacy must be based on fact, of course, but the system works best when leaders are trying to shape public opinion with the best arguments.
