BoCoPreps 10 & 10: Week 3

Jan. 9—Each full week of the winter season, BoCoPreps will highlight 10 teams and 10 athletes that had exceptional performances. While our staff will utilize multiple avenues to compile these lists, readers are encouraged to submit nominations to our email (results@bocopreps.com).

10 teams

Broomfield girls basketball: The Eagles opened 2023 with a pair of victories, including a 68-6 win over Mountain Range. Sophomore Olivia Kim has been a breakout player this season, averaging 11.2 PPG.

Fairview boys basketball: The Knights beat Legacy over the weekend to kick off play in the Front Range League. Freshman Elliot Moskowitz had 16 in the win.

Fairview girls swimming: The Knights won the 28-team Mountain Vista Invitational Saturday with 336 points. Amelia Mason won the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle. Ella Ziegert won the 200 IM and Morgan Cady had another victory in the 500 freestyle.

Holy Family girls basketball: The Class 4A No. 1 Tigers keep rolling. They beat Elizabeth by 37 and Silver Creek by 27 this week to improve to 8-0.

Holy family wrestling: The Tigers won a pair of titles at the Gary Daum Classic over the weekend. Brayden Bach (16-3) won in 138s and Abram Moore (17-2) won 215s.

Legacy girls basketball: The Lightning were dealt with a series of injuries to close 2022. Regrouping this month, they beat Chatfield and Fairview this past week.

Legacy girls swimming: The Lightning won a dual against Fort Collins a week ago behind a pair of wins by Kaitlyn Eiring, then claimed first at the Five Star Relays over the weekend.

Mead girls basketball: The Mavericks beat Longmont Friday, outscoring the Trojans 24-6 in the opening quarter.

Monarch boys basketball: The Coyotes are off to a nice start in 2023 with wins over Lakewood and Northglenn. Junior Evan Trujillo had 14 and 23 points in the wins.

Skyline wrestling: The Falcons finished an area-best third at the Gary Daum Classic. They got gold from Calvin Mendez (113s) and Tobias Pinson (132s). Isaiah Longdo (150s) and Rene Perez (285s) took silver.

10 athletes

Kyle Blauch, Boulder boys basketball: Blauch grabbed his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and 10 boards in a loss to Rock Canyon Wednesday.

Alex Eschmeyer, Peak to Peak girls basketball: Eschmeyer notched her sixth double-double of the season, totaling 15 points and 21 boards against Kent Denver. It was her fifth game of the year with at least 15 rebounds.

Jerek Funkhouser, Niwot boys basketball: He had 26 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Skyline Friday.

Laura Gensert, Centaurus girls basketball: Gensert is nine points away from 1,000 in her career. She scored 25 across two games last week.

Jimmy Grace, Monarch wrestling: In the 285s finals, he won by a 6-3 decision at the Gary Daum Classic, improving to 14-1 on the season.

Natalie Guanella, Monarch girls basketball: Guanella is 18 for 18 on her free throws in 2023. Seriously.

Luke Justice, Frederick boys basketball: He combined for 61 points in two games last week, including 45 in a 90-49 win over Fort Morgan Wednesday.

Santana Leon, Frederick wrestling: Leon improved to 11-0 on the year, notching three pins (all under 80 seconds) en route to winning the 126-pound title at the Gary Daum Classic.

Anna Lillie, Erie girls swimming: Lillie won three individual races over two duals last week. She won the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly against Windsor, then notched another win in the 50 free against Northglenn.

Max Vacco, Prospect Ridge Academy boys basketball: Scored 23 in a 59-57 loss to Brush Wednesday. It was his seventh game with 20 or more points this season.
