BoCoPreps 10&10: Week 8

Feb. 13—Each full week of the winter season, BoCoPreps will highlight 10 teams and 10 athletes that had exceptional performances. While our staff will utilize multiple avenues to compile these lists, readers are encouraged to submit nominations to our email (results@bocopreps.com).

10 teams

Broomfield girls swimming: The Eagles placed an area-best third at the Class 4A meet Thursday. Among top-five finishers were Myra Wherry (second, 200 free, third 500 free), Lola Grace Guthrie (fifth, dive), Ellie Foulke (fifth, 200 IM), Ellianne Effland (fifth, 100 breast) and Ridley Hagerman (fifth, 500 free). Their relays all got on the podium, too, with the 400 free relay taking fourth, the 200 medley relay fifth and 200 free relay fifth.

Broomfield girls wrestling: The Eagles will send an area-most four grapplers to the state tournament this weekend. Samantha White won at 130s, recording three pins along the way. Also qualifying was Sydney Wu (135s), Kaliyah Schimpf (140s) and Lizette Cedillo (170s).

Erie wrestling: The Tigers are sending 10 wrestlers to the state tournament this week. At Class 4A Region 2 at Vista PEAK Saturday, Ramon Salazar (132s) and Carson Hageman (144s) won their bracket, while Noah Bridgewater (106s), Hunter Waneka (120s), Austin Muir (138s), Caleb McCollum (150s), Wyatt Walston (157s), Brendan Young (165s), Lukas Booth (175s) and Jackson Cowgill (285s) also qualified.

Fairview girls swimming: The Knights took fourth at the Class 5A championships. Edith Simecek won the 100-yard butterfly in 53.57 seconds and was fourth in the 100 backstroke. Amelia Mason was third in the 100 fly and fifth in the 200 IM. Their relays all finished top-five with their 200 free relay finishing second, their 200 medley relay third and 400 free relay fifth.

Holy Family boys wrestling: Abram Moore recorded two pins and a decision to win the 215-pound weight bracket at Class 3A Region 3. Lorenzo Avila (120s) also won his bracket as the Tigers, who placed fourth as a team, will send five to state.

Legacy boys wrestling: Quinn Funk recorded four pins en route to gold in the 190-pound weight class at the Class 5A Region 4. Ryan Bynarowicz (175s) also won his bracket as the Lightning will send four to the state tournament.

Mead boys wrestling: Jake Glade recorded three pins and a technical fall en route to the top of the 144-pound podium at Class 4A Region 1. Leister Bowling IV (157s) and Dalton Berg (175s) also won as the Mavericks are sending five to the state tournament.

Monarch girls swimming: The Coyotes' 200 medley relay — Gwyneth Christensen, Audrey Shambo, Mia Prater, Eliza Lennox —won a state title at the Class 4A meet Thursday. Other top-five finishes included Shambo (second, 100 breast, fourth, 200 IM), Lennox (third, 50 free, third, 100 free), Prater (fourth, 50 free) and their 400 free relay (third).

Niwot girls swimming: Jamieson Legh won two state titles (100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) as the Cougars finished fourth at the Class 4A swimming meet. Other top-five finishes included Elizabeth Fay (third, dive), Charlotte Heuer (fifth, 200 free), as well as their 200 free (third) and 400 free relays (second).

Silver Creek girls swimming: Diving led the Raptors to a ninth-place finish at the 4A state meet. Leslie Broz (second), Savannah Wolf (fourth), Haley Lindberg (11th) and Claire Vardas (20th) finished inside the top 20.

10 athletes

Jordan Bindseil, Longmont girls swimming: Bindseil won the 100 freestyle in 51.57 seconds, then took second in the 50 free (25.53). She missed out on her second gold in the 50 by a mere .09 seconds.

Lorelai Frauenfelder, Holy Family girls swimming: The freshman finished second in the 100-yard free (52.13) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:07.98) at the 3A state meet.

Jaden Gardner, Lyons wrestling: Gardner had pins in 50 seconds, 14, 54 and 65 en route to a 2A Region 1 title over the weekend. He will be a top seed at state.

Jamieson Legh, Niwot girls swimming: Legh was the only girl in the area to win multiple individual state titles in swimming. She won gold in the 100 butterfly and backstroke.

Tobias Pinson, Skyline wrestling: Pinson — who recorded two pins en route to winning the 132s bracket — led the way at 4A Region 4 for the Falcons, who qualified five for the state tournament.

Sabrina Rachjaibun, Legacy girls swimming: The University of Denver commit won the 500 free in 4:55.89 and placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:03.84), leading the Lightning to a seventh-place finish.

Edith Simecek, Fairview girls swimming: A year after finishing runner-up in the 100 butterfly, the Princeton commit grabbed gold in it at the 5A state meet.

Emilio Trujillo-Deen, Monarch wrestling: Trujillo-Deen won the 144-pound bracket at Class 5A region 3. The Coyotes qualified five to the championships this weekend.

Xavier Valentin-Bradford, Centaurus wrestling: Valentin-Bradford won the 285-pound title at 5A Region 2, winning with a 5-3 tiebreaker over Pomona's Adrian Arellano.

Zara Zallen, Boulder girls swimming: The Missouri commit won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.58 and placed second (49.84) in the 100 free, leading the Panthers to an eighth-place finish.
