Boden Kapke, a 6-11 prospect, is Butler basketball's second 2023 commit

It is a big weekend for big men in Butler basketball recruiting.

Boden Kapke, a 6-11 prospect, became the second player in the 2023 class to commit to the Bulldogs. He made the announcement on social media Saturday, a day in which Butler was hosting Kokomo’s 6-9 Flory Bidunga on a campus visit.

Both Butler commits had high-scoring junior seasons in high school.

Kapke, of Holy Family Catholic in Victoria, Minn., averaged 27.2 and 14.7 rebounds a game for a 14-14 team. He had highs of 43 and 40 points, and 24 rebounds in another game.

He is a three-star recruit not nationally ranked by 247Sports. However, Kapke picked Butler over offers from programs in the Big Ten (Iowa and Minnesota), ACC (Boston College, Clemson, Wake Forest), Big 12 (Iowa State) and Big East (Xavier). He also had offers from Davidson, Loyola and Northern Iowa.

After a July 27 visit to Butler, Kapke posted a photograph of himself with coach Thad Matta on social media.

Previously committing to Butler was 6-3 guard Finley Bizjack of Byron Nelson High School, Trophy Club, Texas. Bizjack, ranked 150th by 247Sports, averaged 25 ppg for a 24-10 team. He scored 40 points in one game.

The only Butler player whose eligibility expires after 2022-23 is Purdue transfer Eric Hunter Jr. That would leave Butler over-signed for 2023-24, although that changes if a player leaves early for the pros or transfers out.

Bidunga, a 2024 prospect, is also being recruited by Indiana and Purdue. He arrived in Kokomo from the Congo last year and averaged 17.5 points, 13.3 rebounds and 5.3 blocked shots per game.

Butler has been undersized for years, and especially after joining the Big East a decade ago.

That would change if Butler featured five players on the 2023-24 roster at 6-10 or taller: Manny Bates, Jalen Thomas, John-Michael Mulloy, Connor Turnbull and Kapke.
